Description

Looking out from the balcony of his chambers onto the Holy City of Altafidea, the wizard put on his large brimmed cap and walked toward the door. The knocking had become more intense, and he speculated that this might finally be someone worth talking to.

"Ah, what manner of message is this that a Captain of the Inquisition himself would come to see me?" the wizard quipped.

"It is the Purification Division, Master Faizarre," replied the Captain. "It would serve you well to call it by that name."

"Semantics, my dear captain, nothing more. So what brings you with such urgency in your breath?" He continued.

The Captain rolled out a small scroll he was holding in his hand and read out the declaration.

"Master Lorenz Mogi Faizarre, the Ministry of Information has been notified that heretical activity is said to be taking place near the towns bordering Eltem and Lefina. The Ecclesiarchy, therefore, humbly requests your service in finding and eliminating this threat."

The wizard paused and walked to his balcony, looking out onto the White Cathedral, the centre of activity in Altafidea, and the headquarters of the Holy See of the Allfather. A believer himself, Lorenz had been using his arcane abilities to aid the High Nations, earning him the nickname of 'The Priest of the Flame'.

Lorenz looked at the deliverer of his message, and stared at him with his dutiful red eyes. "It is my duty to serve the Allfather's will in this world. I shall ride to Eltem tomorow."

The Captain bowed in respect, but then shook his head. "Nay, sir. Your instructions are to proceed immediately. The Valens awaits you."

Lorenz looked at him with a puzzled expression on his face. "...say again? Did you say... the Valens? It seems I've underestimated your masters - it isn't every day you are required to board one of their light airships. Very well then, if it is haste they request, proceed with all due haste I shall."

The Captain bowed once more. "Of course, sir."

Once aboard the Valens, Lorenz began to contemplate his assignment. It was sunset, and the airship (powered by its Levianth crystal) made a droning hum as it travelled across the skies, towards Eltem.

Heretics, eh? Lorenz thought to himself as he leaned on the front bow of the ship, having looked down at the ground several dozen meters. What manner of heresy demands an almost panicked degree of urgency from the Ecclesiarchy?

The ship's Captain walked up to Lorenz. "Sir," he said, "I have instructions to set you down close to Moyenne. We cannot cross Empire airspace."

Lorenz turned to the Captain. "Whatever's the best for your crew, I suppose," he said.

G's Notes: I find that writing a small introductory story from your NPC's past can lend credence to their motivations in your campaign. In any case, it helps build the lore.
